today: Fruit of the Spirit: Joy; Here’s
what happens…After they finish rebuilding the wall
around Jerusalem, Nehemiah and his friends read from God’s Word. They’re sad to
realize they haven’t been obeying God, but Nehemiah tells them to celebrate
because the joy of the Lord is our strength.

Scriptures. Hang the signs around the house as a reminder that the Spirit can
fill you with joy! 1 Thessalonians 5:16 Romans 12:12

Pastor: Our savior had
no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we
should desire him. He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering,
and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was
despised, and we held him in low esteem.
Congregation: Surely
he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by
God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on
him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity
of us all.
Pastor: Yet it was the
Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his
life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and
the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand. After he has suffered, he will
see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant
will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities. For he bore the sin of
many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Sunday School
News
Volunteers
needed!
Today we will begin our Sunday School year. This year we have an
entirely new format for Pre-K-8th grade. We will be using a curriculum
called Dig In. If you have ever been to VBS, the format is similar to that.
Kids will be meeting in the sanctuary together most of the time, but
sometimes we will divide into small groups. The first theme is the Fruit of
the Spirit. One of the most exciting aspects of this is that you can
volunteer for just one week (or more) for a specific role. We are
looking for Bible discovery teachers, craft, game, sound booth and
song leader volunteers as well as helpers. If you are interested,
please join us for Sunday School one week to observe or ask Kia for more
details on how you can volunteer!
The
second opportunity to volunteer is to become a prayer partner.
Rather than a money offering during the Sunday School time, we will be
taking an offering of Praise and Prayer. Each child Pre-k through 8th will
have the opportunity to write a prayer request or their name on a card.
These cards will then be placed on the table each week in the Fellowship
Hall right after Sunday School begins during coffee time. We ask that you
consider taking one or two of these cards before you leave church each
week. Then throughout the week, please pray for the child and/or item that
they drew a picture of on their card. We hope to foster connection between
generations with this. Whether you are 1 or 100, you can participate in
praying for specific children, needs, and praises that are on the hearts of
our kids in Sunday School!
High
School Catechism will also begin today. They will meet in
the pastor's study. with Kel Vande Kamp.

Sunday School today: Fruit of the Spirit: Love; Galatians
5:22; Luke 15:11-32
Bible Point: Love is a fruit of the Spirit. Family Time: Celebrate each other with a special meal like the one the father
in the Bible story had for his son. Let everyone decide one element of the
meal. During the meal, share things you
love about one another.
The new shipment of greeting cards in support of the GEMS
Girls Club has arrived. This year we are
going to try something different. Please
make checks payable to Lorraine Edwards or pay with cash. This way the deacons are not making one-check-at-a-time
deposits for the cards and, when the checks are cashed, the funds will be available
for purchase of craft items rather than receipts being turned in for
reimbursement at the end of the season.
Thank you for your support of the young girls of our church!
There will be a bridal shower for Olivia Bousema on
Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7:00 pm. The couple is registered at Adorn 1024, Target,
Amazon and Menards.
The offering for next week Sunday will be for Covenantal
Education, which is for the Christian Education of
the youth of our church. This offering
pays for the complete cost of education for the students in our congregation
and supports the Christian Schools that they attend. By this offering we seek to assure that all
the children in this church are trained to live for Jesus Christ according to
the Bible.

the earth.
Pastor:
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will
be filled.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

called sons of God.
Pastor:
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs
is the
Kingdom
of heaven.”

industry, who work in homemaking, who work in medicine, who work in education,
who work in agriculture, who work in government, who work in service to others,
who are beginning a new career, who struggle in their work, who are seeking new
or different jobs, who are retired or anticipating retirement, who are
unemployed or underemployed. Give us joy
in our work, and in using gifts and talents we receive from you. Give us joy in doing all our work to your
honor and glory. Equip us to labor in
ways that promote justice and peace.
Equip us to be ministers of your peace in a world that cries for
peace. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Children and Worship: Parents of kids ages three years old through 1st grade, we will
begin our year next Sunday morning! Please take some time to remind your
children it is a quiet time of worship. Absolutely no running to

Are you interested in joining the team of Children and Worship
Volunteers? We would love to add a few new adult helpers. It
entails about six mornings per school year, and we will work around your
schedule. Please contact Rita. Thanks!

week Sunday our services will be led by Rev. Luke Wynja.
The offering for next week Sunday is for Crossroads Bible
Institute, which is a prison ministry based in Grand
Rapids, Mich. Over thirty years ago, brothers Tom and
Jim de Vries created a Bible studies that could be used for discipleship
through the mail. They built a team of volunteers to review prisoners’
completed Bible lessons and write them encouraging letters. Because it was done
through the mail, the Crossroads program could follow prisoners no matter how
many times they are transferred.

us in a “Circle of Prayer’ for blessings on the 2019/2020 school year on
Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. in the WCS gym. If you are unable to join us at that time,
please take a moment to lift us up in prayer wherever you are. There’s power in prayer. Thank you for continued prayer support
throughout the year.
On
Tuesday at 6 p.m. Bethany Christian Services is hosting a Free Volunteer,
Sunday School and Wednesday night teacher training designed for parents, anyone caring for or teaching children & teens
who have experienced trauma. Many of
the children that come into our churches have experienced some form of trauma.
We believe passionately that giving volunteers the resources they need to
handle situations and know when a child may have trauma is the best way to
serve them! Please send your people! They won't want to miss this hour and a
half FREE training. There will be light refreshments. Held at the Marshall
Evangelical Free Church.
The
Movie Premiere of “He Leadeth Me” will be shown at the Memorial
Auditorium on Sunday, September 8, at 2:00 p.m.
The movie includes the Historic Dayton House as the Judge’s home
in this film! When his enemy is found
dead, a minister challenges the local judge’s decision to adopt an orphaned
teen left behind. The judge will do
everything in his power to claim the boy as the minister denies paternity
claims made against him in efforts to mask his own sins. Inspired by the prodigal son story told in
Luke 15, this story, with a vast array of characters, reminds us how easy it is
to run away from what is good and to deny the truth about who and what we
are. Doors open an hour before
showtime. Freewill donation. General Admission.
Love INC of
Worthington will be holding a Faith and Finances Class this
fall. It will be held on Monday evenings from Sept. 9 to Nov. 25 at the
Worthington Christian Church. We are looking for someone to volunteer
to provide childcare for the children of participants of the Faith and
Finances Class. We have some teenagers who are willing to assist with
care, but an adult supervisor is required. The volunteer would need
to be there from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. There is a meal provided at 5:30
that they are also more than welcome to attend. If you have anyone who is
interested in helping in this capacity please have them contact Wendy at
727-7290.
